How to Check a VIN Number on a Used Vehicle for Free

A 17-character Vehicle Identification Number has been put on every new car manufactured since 1981 for registration and identification purposes.

Before 1981, the numbers were 11 to 17 characters long. The characters can be decoded to identify such information as the vehicle’s make, model, year, body style and engine size. Looking up the number will answer many questions about the vehicle’s history. You can learn if it’s been wrecked, in a flood, stolen, salvaged or had the odometer rolled back. You can learn how many people have owned the vehicle. It is absolutely unnecessary to pay to look up a vehicle’s VIN.
